SPOTLIGHT

Austin W., WHS Senior
Tell us about your role with the WHS JROTC Program:
"I am the Batallion Commander for the WHS Program. My current rank is Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. My responsibilities include overseeing the operations for 117 WHS students that are in the program. I am responsible for organizing drill meets and other events that we have. My favorite part of this is being in the leadership role and helping others learn in a tactful, strategic manner."

What are your plans for the future?
"I go to basic training for the Army National Guard on July 10 in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. I am specifically training to become a Combat Engineer. I also will plan to take college ROTC at South Dakota State University, where I will double major in Military Science and Business."

How has the JROTC helped you develop as a person?
"I have gained more leadership skills with my role. Throughout the 4 years I have also learned a sense of duty and responsibility, as well as developed many interpersonal relationships with others."

What advice do you have for WHS students who are considering JROTC?
"Don't think of this as being recruited for the military. You get to do so much stuff outside of the classroom, such as going on trips and other events. It is a great way to become part of something at WHS that is bigger than yourself."
